DIFFUSE Bamboo Pavilion

Diffuse-Bamboo-pavilion_1

The DIFFUSE Bamboo Pavilion is a project by the Department of Architecture and Design of the USJ Faculty of Arts and Humanities sponsored by the DSEDJ.

This ephemeral architectural structure is built on the long tradition of USJ bamboo pavilions, combining traditional bamboo craftsmanship and local artisanship with the innovative digital design expertise of USJ architecture and design students.

The DIFFUSE Bamboo Pavilion is a complex of three independent interior spaces, embraced by an external bamboo fabric. Its unique form is derived from the specific needs and requests of stakeholders to create a space for exhibition, for an immersive sound installation and for workshops. The result is an unusual cluster of spaces, a unique interplay between volumes and voids, with varying bamboo densities. Its innovative form and tectonics aim to advance architectural fabrication and to inspire the new generation to create spaces for community engagement and interpersonal exchange.

Planned to develop the participants’ comprehensive ability and competitiveness, the pavilion will be open for activities by the USJ and the broader local community, standing as an invitation for cross-disciplinary collaboration, hosting exhibitions, coral performances, lectures, workshops and other community events. The DIFFUSE Bamboo Pavilion is open to the public at USJ’s Ilha Verde Campus Courtyard, and all are welcome to the opening ceremony and to visit during the University’s opening hours.
