Public Lecture | “Know the Rules, and Break Them: Rethinking Web Design Conventions”

About the Talk:

In the early 2000s, it was widely accepted that users wanted websites to work in ways they were already accustomed to. This belief led to the idea that designers should create websites that match these expectations. As a result, interfaces became standardized, following established conventions to provide a consistent and recognizable user experience across the web, which is why so many interfaces look remarkably similar today. But just like I don’t want to live in a world where every building or every chair looks the same, I also don’t want to live in a world where every single interface looks the same. I prefer a world where interfaces are diverse and unique. With audiences getting a whole lot more sophisticated and interaction patterns and design styles evolving significantly since the early 2000s, there are many examples of when breaking with interface conventions not only works but can even lead to higher engagement.

About the Speaker:

Irene Pereyra co-founded Anton & Irene, a studio specializing in interaction design. The studio has developed interactive experiences for diverse clients, including digital redesigns for the Met Museum and M+ Museum, projects for USAToday, artist Shantell Martin, Zumtobel, and a future living survey with SPACE10/IKEA. The studio also dedicates three months a year to self-initiated projects. Irene is the author of “Universal Principles of UX” published by Quarto in March 2023, and is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). Her work is globally recognized, with over 100 talks at design conferences given worldwide. Academically, she’s the Digital Experimentation Masters director at Elisava, Barcelona, teaching Digital Ethics and Playful Research, and co-chairs the Interaction Design program at Harbour.Space in Barcelona and Bangkok.
